Foundations for Farming Training Report For Nyakagando From TAN

three day training

Introduction

A three day training of farmers in Nyakagando was conducted on 5th to 7th March 2018. The training was attended by 30 farmers from various villages and it was facilitated by Mr John Vlaming and his wife Cisca from Bright Hope World in New Zealand. The purpose of the training was to improve farming systems for proper crop yields in Nyakagando community. During the training breakfast and lunch was provided to the farmers.

The facilitator helped farmers to know the relationship between God, Man and Land. He gave them the story of creation and explained that Man had a good relationship with all creation but later sin came to break the relationship and man started to abuse creation by destroying the soil. He further explained that God loves farming, farming is a source of food, and the myth that farmers are poor is not true therefore you can’t live without farming. The facilitator let the farmers know that what he was teaching has been developed from Africa.

Challenges

1)  Foundations for Farming was their first training in the community. There is the need for more training in farming to help crop yields for farmers to acquire more skills.

2) Some farmers feared to plant crops without digging, thinking it would affect their crop yields; they believe soil differs from one place to another. They were advised to try small portions before engaging in large scale farming. This will help them to compare the best method which increases crop yields.

3) Farmers had different views on how to implement what they had learnt. Working in groups will help them to practice as a team.

more work

4) Foundations for Farming needs much labor because it involves different processes like digging the holes, measuring, applying the fertilizer and planting the seeds. Farmers need to work in groups in order to obtain best results.

In Conclusion

The training on Foundations for Farming was beneficial to all the farmers; it will help them to harvest better crop yields hence reducing hunger and poverty in Nyakagando community.

From our recent visit to the villages we met some farmers who were trained already practicing what they learnt. Planting is still going on during the March, April and May rain season.
