Koti People

remote villagesThere are over 90,000 Koti people living in Angoche and the nearby islands.

Currently there are 1,000 Koti and 7,000 Makhua people who have been baptized and are participating weekly in worship. There are 150 “communities of faith” and 200 house meetings.

A typical meeting of the "community of faith" would involve a group of anywhere from 30-200 people gathering under a tree or simple shelter. Their weekly worship would last for 90 minutes. They would also have daily prayer for 60 minutes and a weekly cell group meeting for 60 minutes.

Child Literacy Madrassa

The vision of our TYH madrassa is to help our children succeed in school by teaching them to read Koti before they are taught Portuguese – and to disciple them! 2,000 Koti kids attend four times a week.

keen to learnTraining for Trainers

Every Wednesday from 9am-1pm training is held for the trainers with approximately 30 people attending this. On Thursday/Friday these trainers then repeat the training in 15 zones for local leaders. Within these 15 zones there are 300 leaders who are trained each week. 500 study booklets are produced each week.

Leadership in TYH is strong and visionary, but always plural, very flat, consultative and serving; annual foot-washing is a sacrament of leadership. We train the trainers.

Koti Missions to the Unreached

Two outstanding Koti men have led teams discipling the Mwani people, about 800km north. Slowly Mwani are coming to faith – about 30 have been baptized and are being discipled.

Current Challenges

The current challenge of TYH is to transform Koti society by discipling 10% of the population and changing what it means to be Koti!
