making the balmPartnership Overview

Vidya Sagar is one of those people who never stops thinking. He has so much energy. He is very passionate about growing God’s kingdom and resourcing that growth from within India.

History Of Partnership

Bright Hope World personnel first met Vidya Sagar in 2003 while he was in his final year of study at the South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies (SAIACS), in Bangalore. We kept in touch with Vidya over the following years and visited him a number of times.

In discussing how we could best partner with him, Vidya decided that the best investment would be to assist him develop and produce a balm/ointment that he could sell to make money to support Christian ministry. Funds were subsequently raised for that purpose and production quickly commenced.

Yet this partnership is about more than just making ointment, it is about growing God's kingdom and extending the influence of the Good News about Jesus Christ.

In 2013 Vidya shared his vision to expand the balm production and therefore extend the potential impact of church planting and ministry. 2013 production was around 1,000 balm products per month whereas increased investment was requested to increase production to 5,000 products per month. This expansion was funded in 2014.

Beneficiaries

The primary beneficiaries are the church planters and their families who purchase and sell the balm and the churches they come from.

What We Like About The Partnership

The entrepreneurial nature of the project and the enthusiasm of Vidya Sagar for the larger vision and for the production of the balm are extremely appealing to Bright Hope World. The intended outcome of the project and the large network of people that Vidya Sagar knows also enhance this partnership.

Key People

fantastic coupleLeadership Profile

Vidya Sagar is from Andhra Pradesh. He is married to Ruth and has one daughter, Deo. He is passionate about impacting people with the message of the Bible and the Gospel. The number of ministries he is involved in is quite astounding and gives an insight into his heart. Ruth and Vidya run a school for a few hundred children. He also runs a hostel in conjunction with the school; some children come to the school from remote parts of India and Nepal and even from Korea.

Vidya is also involved in church planting. There are many poor migrant workers living in Bangalore and he visits three of the squatter compounds to lead church services. Every week people are coming to faith. Many of them are from his own people group from Andhra Pradesh.

Every Saturday he meets with around 30 pastors for training and encouragement. He does some of the teaching and he invites others to help him.

Vision And Annual Strategy

bottles of balmVidya's vision related to the production and sale of balm is twofold. It is not done for his own income purposes but to assist church planters to become more self-sufficient and to be able to encourage them. He makes the balm and then sells it to church planters for little more than cost. They then go out and sell it to people and keep the profit.

Some balm is sold to distribution companies for more than cost and this money is used to fund the Saturday meetings that the church planters come to each week. It subsidises their transport to get there, provides a meal while they are together, provides resources and pays costs for the people who come to teach.

The amount they sell it for is approximately 35% of monthly income requirements. If the family of the church planter gets involved in selling, it can be much more than that. This takes the pressure off the churches to find the funds required to support the church planter.

Annual Budget

There is no further requirement for funding but ongoing reports will be filed as to the outcomes of the investment made.
